Irina Saari – Vahva

Irina Saari (née Lahtinen, born on 10 May 1975 in Kauhajoki), better known by her stage name Irina, is a Finnish pop and suomirock singer with a number of best-selling albums. She currently lives in Heinola. Irina was in the music business for about a decade before her first album (which was released in 2004),. She played bars and clubs for six years in a band called Playa, singing everything from Finnish pop to rock and soul. She was also a member of the band Reduxissa.

In August 2002, Irina Saari’s friend Toni Wirtanen, the leadman of a popular Finnish rock band called Apulanta, asked her to sing a song he wrote for a television series. The song was for the show Juulian totuudet (“Juulia’s Truths“). After the project ended, Wirtanen and Irina decided to continue to work together and did the songs “Öiden kruunu” (“The Crown of the Nights”) and “Hiirenloukku” (“Mousetrap”). The songwriting together continued and out of these songs came Irina’s debut album, Vahva (Strong), released on 22 March 2004.

Vahva stayed in the Finnish charts for 24 weeks and a gold edition of the album was released in October 2004 with previously unreleased songs. All of the songs on Irina’s debut album, Vahva, were written by Toni Wirtanen except for the cover of Skädäm’s 1980’s hit “Katujen kuningatar” (“Queen of the Streets”). For some of the songs, Irina is noted as a co-writer.

Irina Saari’s second album, Älä riko kaavaa (Don’t Mess With the Formula), was released on 26 October 2005. For this album, Toni Wirtanen continued to write the songs while Knipi and Ville Pusa also contributed. It reached platinum in 2006 and is currently Irina’s best-selling album. In 2005, Irina received Emma awards for best new pop artist of the year and for debut album of the year.

Irina wrote all of the lyrics herself for her third album, Liiba laaba, which was released on 28 March 2007. Liiba laaba hit gold and then platinum later that year. Irina’s fourth album, Miten valmiiksi tullaan (How to be complete) was released in October 2009, shortly after the birth of her first child. The child was such an eventful change in Irina’s life that as a result, the album’s theme was about parenting and preparation for parenthood, her view being that songs are born of your own experiences. Irina, Toni Wirtanen and Matti Mikkola wrote the songs for this album.

In February 2013, Irina Saari released her fifth album, Askeleita (Steps). The album’s first single, “Koko kuva” (The whole picture) was released digitally on 23 November 2012. Jotain suurempaa (Something bigger) was released as a single in February 2013.

Irina has mentioned that her favourite artists are Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Sting, Robbie Williams, Harry Connick Jr., Egotrippi and Sara. During her career, Irina has sold over 150,000 certified albums in Finland, which places her among the top 30 best-selling female soloists in Finnish music. Irina is married to Henri Saaren. They have a daughter born in 2008 and a son born in 2011. Irina Saari’s husband Henri has remained carefully hidden from the public eye, with the exception of an appearance at the Presidential Palace for an Independence Day reception.
